Discover this exceptional pair of WWII era Japanese Big Eye military binoculars, manufactured by the Nikon for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Originally designed as powerful long-range observation instruments, these imposing binoculars would have been used for spotting vessels and aircraft, navigation and surveillance, either aboard naval vessels or from coastal observation positions. The binoculars are Stamped NIKKO No 1814 denoting 15x magnification, substantial 80mm objective lenses and a 4-degree field of view. They also carry the distinctive triangular Nikko mark , the Japanese optical manufacturer later known as Nikon. Further Japanese markings include 空技廠 , an abbreviation associated with the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Naval Air Technical Arsenal and an important indication of their original military provenance. Acquired by us in unrestored condition, the binoculars have undergone an extensive restoration in our Southhampton workshop UK. The substantial cast metal bodies, originally covered with naval-grade paint, have been stripped and polished to a high lustre, revealing the aluminium, bronze and brass construction beneath. Most importantly, the binoculars remain fully functional. The original optical system and excellent-quality lenses have been retained, making these as impressive to look through as they are to look at. The binoculars are mounted on a substantial adjustable wooden tripod and are accompanied by their original fitted wooden storage case. At this scale, these are far removed from conventional handheld binoculars. Their enormous optical barrels, highly polished metalwork, original Japanese military markings and tall wooden tripod give them an extraordinary sculptural presence A rare surviving piece of Japanese naval and optical history, these Nikon Big Eye binoculars would make a commanding centerpiece for your home or office. Each Binoculars has its own unique markings which means no one else in the world except you would own this incredible, one of a kind, Collectible Piece.
